Wuxia Text Games You Can Play Right Now

Disclosure: we make one of the games on this page — an AI-narrated wuxia sandbox, listed last with a section on when you should pick something else. Everything above it is other people's work, described from its own page.

The text-based wuxia game shelf in English is small, and most of what search turns up is either cultivation (xianxia wearing the word "wuxia") or an idle game calling itself a MUD. Once you strip those out, six things are left that are wuxia — human martial artists, sects, debts and reputation, no immortality — and that you can play as text, most of them free in a browser tab. Here they are, sorted by what kind of text game they are.

Wuxia text RPGs (numbers, fights, progression)

Wuxia Logs

The one most people are looking for when they search for a wuxia text RPG. A solo developer's browser game about the daily life of a martial artist wandering the jianghu: tactical turn-based combat where you interrupt and counter, skills that strengthen through use, internal force to cultivate — in the martial-arts sense, with no realms and no immortality — and travel by carriage relay between mountain trails and settlements. The world is shared without being an MMO: you meet the "shadows" of other players on the road, read notes they left in roadside taverns and trade through a peddler's trunk. Progress is saved to the developer's servers, there are no ads or paywalls, and there is a donation link. It is openly in alpha — the site warns of bugs and wipes — and was updated as recently as 17 September 2026, with a larger sect system (escort missions, transport jobs, hierarchies) announced as coming next. Free, at wuxialogs.com.

Wuxia Lite

Wuxia Logs' smaller sibling on itch.io: a text-based survival RPG in which you, a deserter from an assassin sect, climb a frozen mountain one hundred li to face its grandmaster. Stances, bleed and poison, and three resources — vitality, qi and focus — to balance between caves where you rest and peddlers who sell herbs; past the summit there is an endless mode. Rated 4.8 from six ratings, free, playable in the browser with mouse or touch, and its page states that no generative AI was used. A good ten-minute test of whether text combat is for you before committing to the full game.

Wuxia Life

A text-first roguelike life sim on itch.io: draw traits, pick an origin — farmer, orphan, martial hall, merchant — and let the years run semi-automatically, pausing at the forks that matter: joining a sect, love, feuds, closed-door training. Each run is one life and ends in a "volume" you can reread on a shelf. It has martial realms (Body Tempering, Acquired, Innate, Master), which places it at the edge of the genre rather than outside it. The web demo is a free English slice centred on Mount Hua; the full game is $5.99, buy once, with an offline browser build. Its itch.io page discloses AI assistance in code and graphics.

Wuxia interactive fiction (authored stories)

Out of the Yinshan

A wuxia-inspired ChoiceScript game, the format Choice of Games made popular: you are an agent of the Yinshan Society sent undercover into the famous Hua Manor after a legendary sword, and the question is whether the people there change where your loyalty lies. The free demo is about 60,000 words — prologue and three chapters — with romanceable characters and content warnings for dark themes at the start. Rated 4.9 from 39 ratings on itch.io, still in development, and its page states that no generative AI was used. The best-written thing on this page, and unfinished.

Choice of Kung Fu

A 2015 interactive novel from Choice of Games: become the world's greatest kung-fu fighter or seek enlightenment, on the way to a question for the Dragon Sage. It is finished and polished — $4.99 on Steam (Positive, 93.6% of 47 reviews), and it also plays in the browser on the publisher's own site. It is martial-arts fantasy more than a Jin Yong jianghu story, so treat it as the neighbouring shelf.

Is there a wuxia MUD in English?

The wuxia MUD is a Chinese institution. 北大侠客行 (Peking University Knight-Errant, pkuxkx.net) is still open and free and describes itself as having run steadily for thirty years — and it is Chinese only, like the other classic wuxia MUDs. As of September 2026 we have not found an English-language wuxia MUD that is still running. The apps that call themselves "MUD wuxia" on the phone stores are single-player idle games, mostly cultivation; the text-based cultivation page goes through them. If what you want is a text world other people also live in, Wuxia Logs' asynchronous shared world is the nearest English thing.

Our wuxia sandbox, and what makes it different

Blade RPG's English game opens in a wuxia sandbox: pure martial arts with no magic and no immortals, text only, in the browser. The first scene is fixed — midnight, a ruined temple, you are tied up while masked men demand to know about an escort wagon — and on that first turn the numbered choices are locked: you get out by writing it yourself. Every turn offers five numbered choices, and next to them 🔮 Intent: you write what your character does in your own words, up to 100 words — lie about the wagon, offer a trade, work the rope loose while one of them is talking — and the story plays out the consequences.

What separates it from a chat with a chatbot is that the consequences are kept. What an Intent changes — an item, a martial art, a person, a grudge — is written into panels (Bag, Skills, People, Events) that feed every later turn, and there is a market and a pawnshop guild. You can write your own characters into the People panel. A defeat becomes the next chapter rather than the end. New accounts get 40 free turns and their first three Intents free; sign-in is a one-click email link with no password and no card. Open the sandbox →

FAQ

What is the best wuxia text game?

For a free text RPG with real combat, Wuxia Logs: a browser game about the daily life of a martial artist in the jianghu, with tactical turn-based fights, skills that grow through use and a shared world other players pass through. For authored interactive fiction, the Out of the Yinshan demo. For a whole life in one sitting, Wuxia Life. For writing your own actions instead of choosing from a list, Blade RPG's wuxia sandbox.

Is there a free wuxia browser game?

Yes, several. Wuxia Logs is free with no ads and no paywalls, at wuxialogs.com. Its survival spin-off Wuxia Lite, the Out of the Yinshan demo and the Wuxia Life demo all run free in the browser on itch.io. Blade RPG's wuxia sandbox gives 40 free turns with no card. None of them needs a download.

Is there a wuxia MUD in English?

As of September 2026 we have not found an English-language wuxia MUD that is still running. The classic wuxia MUDs are Chinese: Peking University Knight-Errant (北大侠客行, pkuxkx.net) is still open and free, in Chinese only. The closest English equivalents are Wuxia Logs, whose world is shared asynchronously with other players, and engine-backed AI text games.

Are there wuxia text games without AI?

Yes. Wuxia Lite and Out of the Yinshan both state on their itch.io pages that no generative AI was used. Choice of Kung Fu is a hand-written interactive novel from 2015. Wuxia Life discloses AI-assisted code and graphics. Blade RPG's sandbox is AI-narrated by design.

Can I type my own actions in a wuxia text game?

In Blade RPG's wuxia sandbox, yes: alongside five numbered choices each turn there is Intent, where you write what your character does in up to 100 words and the story plays out the consequences. The other games on this list are choice-based — you pick from options the author wrote.

What is the difference between a wuxia text RPG and wuxia interactive fiction?

A text RPG keeps numbers — health, qi, skills, an inventory — and has fights you can win or lose on them; Wuxia Logs and Wuxia Life are text RPGs. Interactive fiction is an authored branching story where the choices steer relationships and plot; Out of the Yinshan and Choice of Kung Fu are interactive fiction. An AI text game generates the prose as you go; Blade RPG's sandbox does that and writes the consequences into panels that carry forward.

A wuxia text game where you write the move
