Free Text-Based RPGs in a Browser: The Ones Worth Your Evening

Disclosure: we make the last game in the table. Most of this page is about the others, because they're older, larger and often the better answer. Last reviewed September 2026.

Every game below is free to start and runs in a browser with nothing to install. They are not interchangeable: "text-based RPG" covers four families that share only the absence of graphics, and people bounce off the genre because they landed in the wrong one.

Answers to the specific searches

Free text-based RPG online, in a browser?

All eight above. If you want the best writing, Fallen London; the best systems, a MUD; the best jokes, Kingdom of Loathing; the shortest path to being surprised, an AI one.

Free text-based RPG with no signup?

A Dark Room needs nothing. Choice of Games demos need nothing. Everything else wants a free account; ours wants an email address and nothing more.

Best free text-based RPG?

By reputation and longevity, Fallen London and Achaea. By hours-per-dollar, all of them, since the dollar is zero.

Free text-based RPG for Android or iOS?

Fallen London's apps are free. Choice of Games titles have free openings on both stores. Any browser game here runs on a phone with nothing to install.

Text-based RPG with character creation and stats?

MUDs do this most thoroughly (race, class, skills). Torn and Kingdom of Loathing are built on persistent stats. Ours rolls a spirit root and four attributes once, then locks them — creation is one irreversible decision rather than a build screen.

Text-based RPG with no AI?

Achaea, Fallen London, Torn, Kingdom of Loathing, A Dark Room and every ChoiceScript title were written by people, and none of them will hallucinate your inventory.

Something like Torn?

Kingdom of Loathing for the same daily-check-in economy with jokes. MUDs if what you liked was the other players rather than the numbers.

The four families, so you land in the right one

FamilyWhat it feels likeExamples
MUD
real-time multiplayer
A living world with other people in it. Classes, skills, PvP, guilds, an economy that exists whether you log in or not. Authored and finite: you cannot invent a profession by typing one. Achaea, Aetolia, Aardwolf
Interactive fiction
authored branching
A written work you move through; every branch was placed by a person. Nothing generated by a model currently writes at Fallen London's level. Fallen London, Choice of Games, Zork, A Dark Room
Browser stat game
persistent numbers
Long-horizon progression and a real player economy; the interesting content is other players. Rewards a character you've had for four years. Torn, Kingdom of Loathing
AI text RPG
model-generated
Type anything and get prose back. Unbounded, and only as consistent as whatever is enforcing state. AI Dungeon, NovelAI, Blade RPG (ours)

If you want to type anything and have it count

This is the AI family, the newest and the least settled. Model-only tools — AI Dungeon, NovelAI, most companion apps — let the model both narrate and decide. Maximum freedom, but the model can be argued with: say your strike landed and it usually did. Great for writing, weak for stakes. If you're here from AI Dungeon specifically, we wrote a separate comparison of the alternatives.

Engine-backed AI RPGs put a persistent system underneath: health, money, reputation, inventory, death. The model narrates only what the engine already decided. Far fewer of these exist. Ours is one — a text-only cultivation roguelike where your spirit root is rolled once and locked, and death ends the run permanently. 40 turns free, browser, no download.
