Text-Based Cultivation Games: Every One You Can Actually Play in English
"Text-based cultivation game" is what people search after finishing a cultivation novel and wanting to be the mortal with the bad spirit root — without a 3D engine getting between them and the prose. The shelf is small and oddly shaped: a handful of one-person Twine and ChoiceScript projects, a scatter of tiny itch.io RPGs, a lot of things that call themselves "MUDs" and are not, the AI chat options, and — as far as we can find — no published interactive-fiction title and no real MUD at all. Here is all of it, sorted by what it actually is.

Interactive fiction and text life-sims
Xianxia Simulator (Captain Wabbit) — free, browser, Twine
The one most people mean when they say "text cultivation game". A Twine life-simulation: you balance cultivation against a limited lifespan, learn skills, manage NPC relationships and try to survive, with content running up to the eighth layer of Qi Condensation. Rated 4.2 from 81 players with over a hundred comments — and no update since January 2024, so what is there is what you get. It plays in a phone browser, though the developer calls mobile "buggy". You may see it referred to as "Cultivation Quest"; that was a proposed rename in a 2023 devlog, same game.
Dao Ascension and Aura Clash — free ChoiceScript works in progress
Neither Choice of Games nor Hosted Games has ever published a cultivation title — searching both catalogues for the word returns nothing. The genre lives in the works-in-progress forum instead, and two of those WIPs are already enormous. Dao Ascension (DaoImmerser) was about 815,000 words as of 1 September 2026, a year and a half after its thread opened, with a free browser demo and a 4.9 rating from 14 on itch.io; the author states no generative AI is used. Aura Clash is around 800,000 words with a demo on dashingdon and itch.io. Path of Martial Arts is a smaller third. If what you want is to read a cultivation novel in which the choices are yours, these are the deepest text on this page by an order of magnitude.
Year-by-year life sims
- Xianxia LifePath (Extinct) — BitLife-style, one year per turn, free Windows download on itch.io, 4.6 from 5, a prototype updated in mid-2026 with a "no generative AI" note.
- Manhua Life – Life Simulator — English-first, solo developer, released 2026; murim/cultivation text life-sim at 4.8 on the App Store from about 180 ratings.
- ImmortalLife: Word RPG — English and Chinese text cultivation sim on iOS (4.1 from ~225, $4.99 to skip ads); players argue about the lifespan balance.
- Cultivation Simulator – I Want to Cultivate (修仙模拟器-我要修真) — a text reincarnation simulator with a built-in script editor, 10K+ Android installs; the store blurb is English but the interface may not be, and the TapTap listing is Chinese only.
Small text RPGs on itch.io and gd.games
- Text Based Cultivation RPG (Hika, gd.games) — free in the browser, about 5,200 plays and 90% positive reactions; the description is thin, the name is exactly what you searched.
- Nine Heavens: Path to Immortality (icShark) — free browser text RPG published around 1 September 2026, with a disclosed "AI assisted — code and text" label.
- Four Heavenly Valleys (ttr0511) — free browser "text-based story cultivation game".
- Path Of Ascension (text) (maplezer0) — free Windows text RPG at version 0.2, one rating, no generative AI.
- Mystic Samsara (Mustapha Jobe) — a wuxia-inspired text adventure with realms, pay-what-you-want, 2.7 from 6, last updated December 2023.
- Text Cultivation (Csaki01) — an abandoned prototype; the developer says it will not be finished. Listed so you can skip it.
Two Chinese-only projects show up in the same searches and are worth knowing about if you read Chinese: vue-xiuxiangame, an open-source text cultivation game on GitHub with about 1,800 stars under a CC BY-NC licence, and 仙途重开, a free lifetime cultivation text game on itch.io. Neither has an English interface.
"MUDs" that are not MUDs, and the MUD that does not exist
We looked for an English telnet MUD with a cultivation theme on MudConnect and MudVerse and in community threads and found none. What the word attaches to instead is single-player idle games: Immortal Taoists is titled "MUD Wuxia" on the App Store, Infinite Cultivation calls itself a "tick-based MUD", and a $0.99 iOS app named Idle Cultivation is "a tribute to classic MUD mechanics". They are text-heavy and they idle; they are not a shared world. The one text-first idler worth a separate mention is Immortality Idle, an open-source browser incremental about choosing each day's activities across many lives, still receiving commits in September 2026 — see idle cultivation games for the rest of that shelf. On Steam, My Legend of Immortal Cultivation ($4.99, Chinese only, Mixed reviews) is the only text-based idle we found.
Playing cultivation with an AI: what exists and where it breaks
A lot of "text-based cultivation" happens in chat windows now. Verified on 2 September 2026: an AI Dungeon scenario titled "Another Cultivation Story"; a Character.AI bot called TextXiuXianGameCHN, in English despite the name, with about 21,700 interactions, that starts you at Qi Refinement; cultivation "system" cards on JanitorAI and Chub; and a custom ChatGPT GPT named Xianxia Simulator with 1,000-plus conversations and a 3.9 rating from 12. A Steam listing called AI Cultivation World Simulator (free, coming soon) goes further — a language-model god-game — but requires you to supply your own API key and warns that token costs "can be significant".
They all share one structural problem: the model that narrates is also the judge. It will agree that you condensed a Golden Core because you typed that you did, and a cultivation story in which the heavens never refuse you is not a cultivation story. That is not a prompt problem; it is the thing AI text RPGs still cannot do on their own. The fix is to put a real engine underneath, which is the category the last section is about. If you would rather run it yourself, here is a DM prompt that limits the damage.
Text with an engine underneath: Blade RPG's Death Challenge (ours)
A text-only cultivation roguelike in the browser. An AI narrates every turn, but a separate persistent engine holds your realm, HP, qi, satiety, injuries, spirit stones and grudges, and it — not the narrator — decides what happens. Your spirit root (ten types, weighted; one in five cultivators is born muddled) and four innate attributes are rolled once and locked. The ladder is 45 ranks from Qi Condensation Layer 1 to Tribulation Transcendence, and the engine advances at most one rank per turn, so no amount of clever typing skips it. There are five written death conditions, and when one fires the run closes: no reload, no respawn, no revive for sale. 40 turns free, sign-in by email link, no password, no card, runs on a phone. Don't pick it if you want the freeform "anything I type is true" experience of the AI chats above, an idle game, or a story you can rewind — those exist and are listed here. If you wanted a world that can refuse you, start a life →
The nearest neighbour with an engine is Wuxia Logs: free, browser, no ads, no AI, turn-based tactical combat — and wuxia, not xianxia. Qi and meridians there are combat resources, with no realms and no immortality. If martial artists in a human world is actually what you wanted, it is genuinely good; the difference explained.

FAQ
What is the best text-based cultivation game?
To read: Dao Ascension. To play in an evening: Xianxia Simulator. To play with stakes: ours — with the caveat that it is the only one here where you can lose everything.
Which are free in the browser?
Xianxia Simulator, the Dao Ascension and Aura Clash demos, Text Based Cultivation RPG, Nine Heavens, Four Heavenly Valleys, Immortality Idle, Blade RPG's Death Challenge — and Wuxia Logs, if wuxia will do.
Is there a cultivation MUD?
Not a real one that we could find. The "MUD" apps are single-player idlers wearing the word.
Can I just play it in ChatGPT or AI Dungeon?
Yes, and the options above are real. Expect the heavens to agree with everything you say, because nothing but the model is keeping score.
Any on mobile?
Manhua Life and ImmortalLife: Word RPG are native text sims; every browser game here runs on a phone too. The rest of the phone shelf, idle and gacha included, is on cultivation games on mobile.
Does Choice of Games have one?
No published title. Three works in progress with free demos, two of them already novel-length several times over.
Text only. One life. The engine keeps score.
40 free turns, no card, no download. Roll a spirit root and find out how the world kills people.
